Facts

Substance abuse treatment programs are remarkably cost-effective: every $1 spent on treatment saves the public $7. In fact, in a review of 500 social programs, drug and alcohol treatment was ranked among the most cost-effective along with childhood immunizations, preschool education, and prenatal care. Treatment has also proven to be more cost-effective than other drug control strategies, including federal efforts in reducing cocaine use through interdiction and enforcement.

Specifically, $34 million dollars invested in treatment would reduce cocaine use as much as an expenditure of $336 million for interdiction or $246 million for enforcement (Rand Corporation, 1994).
