Vermont Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program
Vermont’s Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program (VTEHDI) is part of the Department's Children with Special Health Needs services. VTEHDI provides support, training, and case management to families and their babies, hospitals, and community providers.
The program works collaboratively with state and national agencies and organizations to achieve the National EHDI goals.
- All newborns will be screened for hearing loss by one month of age
- All infants who do not pass the screening will have a diagnostic evaluation by three months of age
- All infant identified with hearing loss will be enrolled in early intervention services by six months of age.

Universal Newborn Hearing Screening
All Vermont birthing hospitals screen newborns born at or admitted to their facilities for hearing loss prior to discharge. Most hospitals offer outpatient hearing screenings for newborns that were not screened, did not pass the first screening or were born at home.
Screening results are sent to the VTEHDI Program by each hospital. In addition to results, hospitals provide high-risk information on each baby related to late onset hearing loss. VTEHDI provides families and providers follow-up recommendations for on-going hearing health care based on the identified risk factor. Contact VTEHDI for more information.
Vermont Early Hearing Detection & Intervention Program (VTEHDI)

CSHN Hearing Aid Financial Assistance
Financial assistance is available to children from birth to 18 years of age through the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program.

Hearing Advisory Council
The Hearing Advisory Council is a multidisciplinary volunteer team. The focus of the council is to advise the Health Department on hearing matters that impact individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing, their families, and the professionals involved with their care. The team works in collaboration with families and community partners. Contact VTEHDI for more information.
Vermont Parent Infant Program (VTPIP)
VTPIP is an early intervention program that provides families with the necessary information, support and services needed to better understand their child’s hearing loss and how to develop communication skills.
VTPIP is part of the Vermont Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing , and works with the Children's Integrated Services-Early Intervention (CIS-EI), previously known as Family Infant Toddler Program (FITP) which provides services to children birth to three who have special needs. Children must be enrolled in FITP to receive services from VTPIP.
